Lunch at the National Army Museum and tour of The Chelsea Physic Garden - retired members event

11 July 2024 12:00-16:00, London, United Kingdom

This event is for RSC Members only

Introduction
Lunch will be at the National Army Museum at 12.00pm (noon) followed by a guided tour of The Chelsea Physic Garden.

The Chelsea Physic Garden is a 鈥渟ecret鈥 garden in the heart of London, an historic living museum as well as a haven of beauty and relaxation. It was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London in order that its apprentices could study the medicinal properties of plants, and is second only in age to the Oxford Physic Garden, which dates from 1621.

The Garden has around 5,000 types of plant, concentrating on medicinal plants and rare & endangered ones. In the 1700s it became one of the world`s leading centres of botany and plant exchange. This role has expanded recently because of the renewed interest in natural medicine.

There is a grade (ll) listed pond rock garden, the oldest of its kind in England, built from old building stone from the Tower of London and Icelandic lava brought back by Sir Joseph Banks. The cafe is highly regarded venue for afternoon tea and there is a wide range of botanical books for sale in the shop.
