Access to clean water remains a pressing global challenge, particularly in the face of increasing pollutants, emerging contaminants, and growing water scarcity. This themed collection focuses on the development and application of advanced membranes and functional materials, including nanocomposites, hybrid adsorbents, and catalytic systems, for treating complex water and wastewater streams.

Key topics include:

  • Next-generation nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and forward osmosis membranes
  • Hybrid membranes with antifouling, selective, or catalytic properties
  • Functionalized materials for targeted contaminant removal (e.g., PFAS, heavy metals, antibiotics)
  • Electrochemical and photocatalytic membrane-integrated systems
  • Resource recovery from wastewater using advanced materials
  • Reuse and cascading strategies for membrane systems
  • Sustainable membrane fabrication from waste-derived materials

The objective of the collection is to provide a platform for the most recent advancements and future directions in integrating membrane science with materials innovation, contributing to high-performance and sustainable water treatment technologies. Contributions will include research articles (experimental or modelling), critical reviews, and perspectives, as well as case studies and pilot-scale demonstrations.
